Requisition Id 11432 Overview: The Applied Technical Analysis Group seeks early to mid-career applicants to perform engineering analytical work in support of projects within the nuclear non-proliferation/nuclear security arena.
The applicant will be responsible for analyzing information, providing technical and management support R&D projects, producing written products, and briefing material to peers, management, and sponsors.
Purpose: This position will support state of the art Research and Development (R&D) for a group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture.
The R&D Staff member supports a group of peers and senior staff members with the primary goals of pursuing global scientific leadership in their field, developing a strategy to develop a world class capability, nurturing ORNL’s culture among group members, and continuing to build and scale up individual excellence and impact.
R&D Staff reports to the Group Leader who implements the scientific vision; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; performs R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; sets, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.
The National Security Sciences Directorate conducts research and development to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges and adversaries.
Our directorate houses S&T leadership in cybersecurity and cyber-physical resiliency, data analytics, geospatial science and technology, nuclear nonproliferation, and high-performance computing for sensitive national security missions.
We draw on the Laboratory’s exceptional facilities and work closely with leading researchers in other areas at the lab such as nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering, applied materials, advanced manufacturing, biosecurity, transportation, and computing.

Major Job Duties and Responsibilities: The applicant will be responsible for developing and growing their technical expertise within the nuclear fuel cycle and performing the following major duties and responsibilities: Provide technical and management support to programs, projects, and tasks related to nuclear fuel cycle technologies Produce peer-reviewed papers and briefings of engineering assessments related to nuclear fuel cycle technologies Deliver briefings and classroom instruction related to the nuclear fuel cycle Interact and collaborate with agencies and members of the national security community Abide by all environmental, safety, health and quality requirements and implement practices per ORNL’s Standards-based Management System (SBMS).

in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with at least 8 years of experience, or M.
S.
in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with at least 7 years of experience, or a PhD in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with at least 2 years of experience Demonstrated ability and willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills is essential Strong written and oral communication skills are essential Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members Ability to interact with sponsors and officials from other government agencies Occasional domestic travel This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Q clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access from the Department of Energy.
As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
In addition, due the SCI, you will be subject to random polygraph testing.
Preferred Qualifications Experience in the nuclear fuel cycle is desirable such as uranium mining/milling, uranium refining, UF6 production, uranium enrichment, reactor fuel production, zirconium/hafnium separation, reactor operation, spent fuel reprocessing, highly enriched uranium or plutonium processing.
Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) or other government agencies is highly desirable.
Special Requirement: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy.
As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.

Work Direction and Interfaces: This position reports to the Fuel Cycle Analysis Group Leader, Field Intelligence Operations Division, National Security Sciences Directorate.
