Overview:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Metrology Engineer for the Fabrication, Inspection, Instrumentation Division’s Metrology Laboratory in the Facilities & Operations Directorate.
The ORNL Metrology Laboratory provides in-laboratory calibration services to the ORNL research and operations community as well as some external customers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: Serves as technical contact for Metrology calibration and inspection disciplines to include but not limited to Dimensional, Torque, Mass/Balance, Pressure, Temperature, and/or Electrical.
Review/approve calibration reports, uncertainty budgets, inspection reports, etc.
Develop and peer-review calibration procedures using MET/CAL and MET/TEAM, Lab-view and written formats.
Ensures continued care and traceability of ORNL Metrology Laboratory reference standards within assigned disciplines.
Interface with customers on technical problems and the determination and documentation of calibration requirements.
Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.
Ensure the protection, packaging, preservation, and proper handling and storage of laboratory standards and equipment while under ORNL Metrology Laboratory control.
Ensures that the ORNL Metrology Laboratory maintains and expands, as appropriate, its National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) accreditation to ISO standard 17025:2017.
Maintains current knowledge of new measurement techniques within assigned disciplines and ensures the ORNL Metrology Laboratory remains on the cutting edge of the metrology technology.
Recommend training opportunities for technicians to the Technical and/or Program Managers.
Evaluate and document qualifications of suppliers and subcontractors.
Evaluate and document environmental limits for operation of laboratory equipment.
For out-of-limit conditions, analyze and determine the impact of the condition and take appropriate action up to and including suspension of work in the affected areas.
Provide training, technical direction and support to metrology technicians performing calibrations.
Maintain status of laboratory standards including calibration status, ensuring proper close-out calibration or checks for standards being decommissioned or whose recalibrations are being delayed.

Basic Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a technical discipline with a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience working in a calibration laboratory or similar setting.
Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with working in an ISO-17025 accredited laboratory.
Experience with metrology asset management system software such as Fluke’s MET/TEAM or similar software.
Significant experience with and proficiency in uncertainty budgeting.
Thorough understanding of principles of calibration traceability.
Significant experience with and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word, or similar software.
Experience with Temperature, Pressure, Electrical, Torque, Dimensional, Mass, and Mass Balance calibration techniques.
Experience directing the work of both bargaining unit and non-bargaining unit staff.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements: Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions.
As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.
As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
