REPORTS TO: Principal TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months SALARY: NC Teacher Salary Scale FLSA EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT: Exempt MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in special education with at least one area of disability as a teacher.
Must be licensed in North Carolina.
Specific NCDPI License required: 88083 Visually Impaired This position will be a split position working with our visually impaired student (currently one) part time and as an EC Teacher at our Primary School part time.
The current VI student requires Braille instruction and direct Specially Designed Instruction to help achieve goals set in the IEP with implementation of Orientation & Mobility increasing throughout the enrollment of the student.
This teacher would be the primary case manager for any other VI students entering the district moving forward, PK-12.
The part-time Primary School role will be serving PK-2nd grade students.
Role of the Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) Serve as the Case Manager for any student with a visual impairment as their primary disability Provide direct instruction of alternative media in the areas of reading and writing, including Braille and large print Complete a Functional Vision Assessment Identify the educational implications of different visual impairments Collaborate with team members, including families Create recommendations to maximize the learning environment Determine need for alternative media in the areas of reading and writing such as Braille or large print Determine need for magnifiers and other optical devices Conduct assessments in the areas of the expanded core curriculum Serve on the team that prepares and monitors the child’s IEP, IFSP or 504 plan Prepare or obtains textbooks and other instructional materials Schedule time to meet with families and educational team members Provide suggestions and strategies for the general education curriculum Provide in-service training for paraprofessionals, teachers, families and any other team members Consult with teachers regarding physical education, art, music, and extra-curricular activities Consult with Low Vision doctors Duties & Responsibilities Develops and implements an instructional plan which is compatible with the school and system- wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
Is responsible for the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implements the IEP; and uses diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEP’s as needed.
Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs.
Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials.
Monitors student behavior; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.
Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
Communicates with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students; consults with community care-givers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities; and complies with state and federal education statutes.
Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.
Ability to maintain basic files and records.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitates by work assignments.
Completes random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
Performs other related work as required.

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Requires the ability to talk and hear.
