Illustrative Examples of Work -Plans, coordinates and conducts a variety of group fitness activities for participants to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.
-Prepares and delivers exercise classes intended to motivate and challenge program participants and modifies the routines to accommodate the skill levels of participants.
-Ensures the safety of group exercise participants to prevent any liability to the City of Pigeon Forge.
-Arrives before classes are scheduled to begin to set up audio equipment, meet and greet participants, answer questions, record attendance and ensure that classes begin on time.
-Utilizes legally purchased music appropriate for exercise classes to accompany exercise routines.
-Remains after class to answer participants’ questions, demonstrate and clarify moves used in class, etc.
-Maintains the exercise rooms in an orderly manner and ensures a safe environment to minimize falls and/or injuries.
-Attends required trainings schedules by the City or community center and maintains current group fitness certifications and CPR/AED certifications.
-Assists with planning and coordinating special events and activities when necessary.
-Assists with supervising participants utilizing recreation center facilities; enforcing center policies and maintaining order at all times.
-Inspects exercise equipment to ensure it is in proper working order, issues equipment to individuals and groups and assists with maintaining an accurate and up to date inventory of all supplies and equipment.
-Assists with developing and coordinating programs and assists participants in proper athletic training.
-Attends workshops and seminars to remain current on emerging fitness trends, acceptable industry standards, etc.
-Assists with the preparation of calendars and newsletters to advertise and promote recreation center exercise classes, special events and related activities.
-Interacts with local and regional community groups and organizations to effectively coordinate recreational programs and activities.
-Assists with preparing and maintaining exercise program files and records.
-Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work Graduation from an accredited four year high school supplemented with additional training and education in recreation, health and/or physical education, sports management or related field; considerable experience with developing and coordinating recreational programs; thorough knowledge of exercise physiology including industry standards and regulations; strong organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills; considerable knowledge of health and safety regulations governing exercise programs and recreational facilities; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills: -Thorough knowledge of exercise physiology including aerobics, strength training, cardiovascular exercises, contraindicated moves, etc.
-Thorough knowledge of the industry standards and practices pertaining to group exercise activities including emerging trends, health regulations, required certifications, etc.
-Thorough knowledge of the Community Center program rules, regulations and guidelines.
-Thorough knowledge of the proper use of exercise equipment utilized for group exercise programs including dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, bosus, stability balls, resistance tubing, etc.
-Thorough knowledge of the health and safety standards for exercise classrooms and the use of universal precautions required for dealing with blood borne pathogens.
-Considerable knowledge of health regulations, building and fire codes and occupancy standards for a municipal recreation center.
-Considerable knowledge of appropriate responses to emergency situations that may occur during exercise routines including cardiovascular events, syncopal episodes, etc.
-Considerable knowledge of TOSHA/OSHA and ADA and related discrimination regulations pertaining to group exercise programs.
-Ability to maintain exercise program rosters, files, records and related documentation in an organized and accessible manner.
-Ability to develop and implement effective policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of individuals participating in exercise activities.
-Ability to interact with local officials, co-workers, vendors, constituents and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
-Ability to effectively plan and organize a variety of exercise programs for children and adults of all skill levels, accurately assess the skill levels of participants and modify exercise routines accordingly.
-Ability to effectively motivate and promote healthy lifestyles for exercise program participants.
-Ability to prepare creative and attractive calendars, press releases and other promotional materials to advertise and promote recreation center programs and activities.
-Ability to effectively assist program participants in various athletic, training and recreational activities.
-Ability to remain current on emerging trends in group exercise activities and required certifications.
-Ability to effectively respond to emergency medical situations encountered during exercise programs and activities.
-Skill in the use of exercise equipment and machines utilized for group exercise activities including dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, bosus, stability balls, resistance tubing, etc.
Necessary Special Requirements -Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Group Exercise Instructor Certification.
-American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED Certification.
Physical Requirements -This medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and perform exercise routines.
-Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions -Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word -Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels -Visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, use of exercise equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities -The worker is subject to inside and occasional outside environmental conditions.
-The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized protective equipment.
