Veterinary Assistant, Small Animal Clinical Sciences - College of Veterinary Medicine - 23000002KX Veterinary Assistant, Small Animal Clinical Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Veterinary Assistant, located within the Small Animal Clinical Sciences department.
The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of animal husbandry functions such as general care, feeding, cleaning, exercising, and record keeping of hospital patients.
Assists clinicians, licensed veterinary nurses, and veterinary students with the care of patients.
Performs housekeeping and general clinic duties outside of assigned service area.
Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Veterinary Assistant 1, Veterinary Assistant 2, Senior Veterinary Assistant 1, or Senior Veterinary Assistant 2.
Typical Responsibilities: ANIMAL HANDLING AND CARE: Performs animal restraint on various species for physical exams and medical procedures, such as blood draws, urine collection via cystocentesis, blood pressures, and injections.
Prepares cages and runs with bedding, water, and other supplies.
Feeds diets as prescribed to admitted patients.
Creates and/or provides enrichment devices and activities.
Exercises patients, using special care or equipment if prescribed, as needed.
Records daily observations on cage cards.
Assists in the admittance and discharge of patients.
Performs bathing or grooming as needed.
HOUSEKEEPING, SERVICE NEEDS, AND GENERAL CLINIC DUTIES: Cleans and disinfects animal cages, animal rooms, and treatment rooms.
Maintains inventory of medical supply items (procured from Pharmacy and Central Supply) and numerous varieties of foods, seeds, fruits, vegetables, etc.
, which are needed to provide nourishment to various species.
Orders and stocks supplies, and rotates food for freshness.
Obtains supplies and sets up equipment as needed for medical procedures.
Provides assistance with basic animal monitoring when patients are under anesthesia for minor medical procedures or surgeries.
Provides laundry collection and dispersement, trash disposal, dish washing, pet waste removal from outdoor walking areas, and collection, transport, and disposal of biohazard sharps and waste to outdoor facility.
Assists in collection and processing of patient specimens by preparing supplies and delivering samples to various clinical labs.
Participates in infectious disease control and prevention through proper disinfection and sanitation of contaminated areas as specified by the infectious disease control and prevention Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent Must be at least 18 years of age Must have a valid driver’s license Preferred Qualifications: Relevant experience working with small animals, including but not limited to dogs, cats, birds, and rodents, preferred.
The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year.
Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work is required of this position.
