Purpose of Job The purpose of this classification is to implement comprehensive tobacco use prevention and control plans developed in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Health.
Public Health Educators are responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating population-based health education programs for the community with a specific focus on engaging community stakeholders in a strategic planning process to improve health and quality of life.
Essential Functions The Public Health Educator is responsible for the following essential functions: Assesses individual and community needs for health education; develops and analyzes data; identifies behaviors.
Plans effective community interventions, based on CDC’s “best practices” and evidence-based recommendations; formulates measurable program outcomes and selects strategies; provides technical assistance to community groups.
Implements health education programs; provides presentations of education programs; selects best methods and media to implement program plans.
On occasion, may be required to oversee the assignments of clerical support and student interns.
Evaluates the effectiveness of program; develops plans to assess achievement of program goals; develops and inventory of existing valid and reliable tests and survey instruments; evaluates the applicability of resource materials; monitors programs through evaluations; establishing different methods for distribution educational materials.
Communicates health and education needs, concerns, and resources to the public; develops and maintains a working relationship with the media, radio, television, newspaper; designs and prepares brochures, bullets, and news releases; plans and prepares materials for special projects; selects, writes, illustrates, edits, compiles and/or supplies health education materials for use by organization and individuals.
Coordinates health education services among community agencies; organizes in-service training programs for teachers, volunteers, and other interest personnel.
Serves as a resource person in health education; analyzes requests for information; serves as a consultant on public health concerns to staff, community, professional, faith-based, training, and civic groups.
Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field reading professional literature, journals and attending related seminars and conferences Coordinate a tobacco cessation program with one-on-one counseling sessions using motivational interviewing skills.
Local travel and occasional overnight travel are required Additional Job Functions Attends internal and external educational programs and professional meetings as available for continuing professional education.
Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional, or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours.
Perform other duties as required Minimum Training & Qualifications Master’s Degree in Public Health Education, or a related field; certification as a Health Education Specialist preferred.
Minimum of three to five years of program development experience and administrative Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position.
Must hold and maintain a current valid Tennessee driver’s license.
Must have reliable transportation and carry appropriate insurance coverage on personal automobile Specialized Knowledge Must be proficient in overseeing all aspects of grant budget management Competencies Proficient is use of computers, printers, and other electronic devices.
Must be proficient in Windows OS and Microsoft Office Ability to focus and demonstrate great attention to detail.
Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to engage in occasional light physical activity.
